How Can a Disciple Be an EFFECTIVE WITNESS?
A disciple can be found in any setting—a housewife caring for her home, a farmer, mechanic, plumber, lawyer, doctor, software engineer, scientist, or a businessman leading an MNC. Whatever the profession a disciple holds, it's a sacred calling, he or she is called the salt of the earth and the light of the world, a city on a hill visible to everyone—a potential witness in a dark world. Matt 5:13-16
At times we may feel that our light is very dim, like a zero-watt bulb, so faint that we think it is making little or no spiritual impact on others. The danger of this kind of thinking is that it can mislead us into believing that we must leave our current occupation and pursue something that appears more spiritually significant in order to be useful for the Lord, like a FULL-TIME ministry.
Can we disciples do something right where we are to make an immediate impact in our environment? - YES and a resounding YES!
A disciple can be an effective witness not primarily by changing their LOOKS, LOCATION or PROFESSION, but by how we live and respond in everyday situations. Remember we are the 'SALT' who can bring the FLAVOR of the Kingdom to our insipid environment. You cannot see the salt in a tasty curry, but you immediately know when it is there.
Our LIVES speak LOUDER than our WORDS. This is where most of us miss the mark in my view. We are to a BE AUTHENTIC DISCIPLE. Sadly, honesty, humility, patience, and kindness are many other Christian virtues are scarcely seen in us. Reflecting Christ-Like ATTITUDES are the FIRST FRUITS that should be visible to others.
Opportunities will surely come across our PATH as we walk in RELATIONSHIP with HIM.
We will look at a few more in our next post.
Shalom!
