Soul Sleep Examined

Hello Disciples!

Good Morning.

I was having a conversation with a friend this morning, and we gradually meandered into theology. The subject of soul sleep came up in our discussion. He seemed to believe in this view very strongly. The internet is buzzing now with this new teaching. Did you hear about it? In short, they hold to the view that the soul is unconscious after death until resurrection.

Apparently, this theology came from a denomination that has strong views regarding the soul of a person losing consciousness after death. However, does it withstand the test of the Scriptures? We need to examine it thoroughly and not cherry-pick verses to suit our preconceived line of thinking. Sadly, this theology is built on the Lazarus story in John 11, where our Lord said that Lazarus is sleeping and that He is going to wake him up. This was metaphorical language that Jesus used.

Our soul does not go to sleep or lose consciousness after death. It either goes into the presence of God or Hades, the place for the unregenerate. Do you remember the rich man and Lazarus story? The rich man died and awakened in Hades, and the beggar went into the presence of God. The rich man's soul was conscious of himself and could recall events on the earth. His soul was alive and active in Hades (not the hell of Revelation 20). He was not sleeping in the grave without consciousness of himself. I see this as a major error being propagated. It's a wrong understanding of Scripture.

There are many scriptures that reveal the truth on this matter. Look up these verses in the Bible and test everything before you believe it.

Luke 23:43, Philippians 1:23, 2 Corinthians 5:8, Luke 16:19–31, Revelation 6:9–10

It is appointed for man to die once and then the judgment (Hebrews 9:27). It is important to know our destination.

Until we meet again in the next post, may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Shalom!
